Entrajo Canyon Moab Entrajo Canyon (en-TRAH-ho) is named after the sandstone layers in which it is found. The upper canyon section is Entrada sandstone and the lower canyon section is Navajo sandstone. You pass through a very distinct boundary between these two layers while traveling down the canyon. Mary Jane Canyon hike is an 8.7-mile hike along streambed in a canyon that narrows to less than 100 feet wide with walls to almost 200 feet tall. At the turnaround, there is a double spouted waterfall caused by a large wedged rock splitting the water's flow. The Moab area contains a large number of pet friendly trails on Bureau of Land Management lands to suit any experience level. From cool stream-side hikes, to spectacular sandstone arches, the Moab area is full of exciting day-hikes suitable for the entire family. What follows is just a taste of what Moab has to offer outside of the national parks.
There are few slot canyons in Canyonlands National Park since the rock most conducive to their formation (Navajo sandstone) is exposed only in a few high elevation areas, in the Island in the Sky; across most of the park it is the Wingate, Moenkopi, White Rim and Cedar Mesa formations that are visible, and the ravines, although often sheer-sided, are relatively wide, bounded by cliffs, benches and ledges. The area provides several options for day-hikes, short backpacking trips or even an alternate route for Hayduke hikers looking to escape the official route along the paved road. Entrajo Canyon is a technical canyoneering route that requires complete technical gear. Entrajo is rated 3B II with the Canyon Rating System. This route is beginner friendly with competent leadership. A GPS is useful. Good map reading skills and a route description are essential.
